Originally built as the home of William Fithian, the inn dates back to 1663. However, it was not until 1770 when the home was converted into an inn that it gained its name and began an enduring reputation for warmth and welcome. In its many years, the inn has retained much of its original architecture and colonial charm. The steep wooden staircase, exposed ceiling beams and book-lined lounge with antique fireplace are a few of the elements that lend grace and style. There is a $60 per person prixe fixe menu that will transport you instantly into the world of fine dining without being rough on your wallet.

Second course includes a spicy Montauk fluke tartare, steam Bans Island mussels with Calabrian chilies, crispy softshell grab and seared Hudson Valley foie gras. For the third course, choose from seared Montauk sea scallops, roasted Scottish salmon, braised rabbit leg, pork rib chop or striploin. Through a book-lined lounge, kept warm in winter months by a comforting fireplace, arriving guests are ushered into the intimate 40-seat main dining room.

It’s some of the best fine dining that the Hamptons has to offer. Executive Chef Michael Rozzi has put together a menu that is hard to beat and the restaurant is run by long-time manager, Carol Covell. I want to get to the food because that’s the real star of the show, but the people that work here are also. This is a well crafted wine list by someone who really knows their wine. Not too many people know the Gruet Brut Blanc de Noirs from New Mexico (an excellent sparkling). The list is excellent with California, Long Island, France, Italy, Australia and Spain well represented.
Prices range from reasonable to very expensive, but there are plenty of selections under $75. Very rarely is a meal presented to me and I think to myself, “How were they able to do this? ” But that’s what happened to me at the 1770 House. We had that California rabbit braised in carrot and parmesan broth with hand-cut fettuccine, garlic chive, pesto, mustard greens and hazelnuts. Is that not the most wonderful combination you’ve ever heard of?
